For
this year’s summer vacation, my wife and I along with our children
decided to travel to Cancun, Mexico. We chose Cancun because
we
heard a great deal about its beautiful beaches and the many special
attractions.
The city of Cancun, part of which is an
island, has the warm Caribbean Sea that washes on its eastern
shores. Cancun is located on the northeast tip of Mexico’s
Yucatan Peninsula, in southeastern Mexico on the eastern coast of
Quintana Roo state. Originally just a fisherman’s island surrounded by
forest and unknown shores, Cancun has grown into a world renowned
travel destination.
The flight to Cancun was seven hours long,
covering about 4 400 km south-east of Vancouver, British Columbia,
Canada. We flew for four hours from Vancouver International
Airport to Dallas, Texas, U.S.A., then a three hour direct flight to
Cancun. Once landing there, we were struck by the wonderful
hot
and sunny weather.
Cancun is a great place to stay and visit,
whether it is for an extended vacation or for just a quick
getaway. The local people are very courteous, and there are
many
things to do and many attractions to see. The beaches are the main draw
in Cancun, beaches with white soft sand and warm Caribbean Sea
waters. One can visit the Cenotes, which are caves through
which
underground rivers flow. There are several large natural
parks in
the area, places where you can view and experience the rich wildlife
and plant species native to the area. You can also visit the
many
local markets filled with unique Mexican handicrafts. These
are
just a few of the many attractions in Cancun. During our
stay, we
spent most of our time at the beach - swimming, snorkeling, reading,
and sun-tanning.
Mexico’s interesting and unique history and
culture is largely based on two ancient tribes – the Aztecs and
Mayans. The local Cancun people were eager to explain their
particular Mexican roots and heritage. For centuries, the
Mexican
area which now includes Cancun was the heart of the ancient Mayan
civilization. In order to learn more about the Mayans, we
took
tours of the ancient Mayan ruins, including the famous Mayan
Pyramids. In ancient times, the Mayan people were one of the
world’s most densely populated societies with an advanced and vibrant
culture. The Mayan civilization is characterized by its
ancient
beautiful art, historical superior architecture, and advanced
astronomical and mathematical concepts which were far ahead of their
time.
Visiting Cancun proved to be a very good choice. We
had a great vacation, enjoyed some of the special attractions, and
learned about the local culture. As a travel destination for
a
well-rounded vacation, Cancun is a great option.
