You can approach the topic anyway you like. Choose how to narrow it. Focus on writing detailed and specific sentences and well developed paragraphs which will lead to a great essay.

Write a five paragraph essay of about 300 words on the following:

Which time in the past or future would you like to travel to and why.

(Follow standard essay format which we have been studying: introduction, three body paragraphs and conclusion. Your intro and conclusion should each have at least three sentences. Each body paragraph should have a topic sentence and conclusion. You should have a title.)

Think about active writing; think about concrete and specific examples and details.

1. Process Paragraph

In a paragraph of 150-200 words, write a process paragraph explaining how to make your favourite recipe.

·         Remember to write this in standard paragraph form with a title, topic sentence, supporting details and concluding sentence.

·         Do not write your recipe in recipe format. It should be a paragraph.

·         Use concrete, specific language. For an example, read Evergreen pages 92-93.

·         Do not copy from the Internet-use only your own words.

 

2.  Reread Lucy Gray several times-put questions marks by the parts you don’t understand. (orally or written)-you don’t have to hand this work in. We will continue work on the poem on Thursday.

Note: Reading and Description Test next Tuesday

You may bring your description vocabulary sheet, but you cannot use your dictionaries or textbook. To prepare, review the description paragraph you wrote and review your error book. If you have not started an error book, then look over all your marked homework; write down your errors and corrections. Review these corrections each time you write. Soon you won’t make those errors any more.

Avoiding Vagueness: Read Evergreen

The following sentences are dull and general. Revise them to make them concrete, specific and vivid. Remember our active writing lesson. Use vivid verbs, specific nouns and colourful adjective. You may add and delete words and change the sentence completely.

·         Describe the moment in detail using the concrete and specific images you generated in your brainstorm box.

·         Make the moment come alive with concrete specific images.

·         Please refer to your Sensory Vocabulary sheet to help you with descriptive words.

Follow the usual rules for paragraphs. Write your paragraph on a separate piece of paper.

In class today we did Grammar Writing #3.1, watched a DVD, wrote about it and worked on Active Writing. (1 handouts)

 

Test: Thursday, Feb 23: reading, vocabularyand a paragraph test on the short stories Charles and Antaeus. Read the stories a couple of times at least to prepare. You should know the stories very well.  Make sure you know the new vocabulary too.

  1. Write about what has happened in your novel so far.
  2. What are you enjoying about your novel? (two points)
  3. What do you dislike about it? (two points)

 

 

2. Write your reaction to the movie. Was it what you expected? Was it different? Did it disappoint you? Did you like it? Freewrite for 5 minutes on your reaction to the movie.

3.  Write a paragraph of about 150-200 words describing the place you visited on our imaginary trip. (If you missed class, imagine a place you would like to go back to. Imagine what you can see, hear, taste, touch and smell.)

Focus on writing actively. Think of the worksheet we did.

Include at least two of the five senses: sight, sound, smell, taste, touch.

After reading your paragraph, the reader will be able to “see, or hear or smell” in his mind your particular scene.

 

  1. Keep reading you novel. You should be halfway or more in you novel by March 8.

 

February 16 Communications 12

 

In class today we did Grammar Writing #2.2, did some more prewriting and chose our novels.

If you missed class, see Louise to get Novel Paper 1 to choose a novel as soon as possible.

 

Test: Thursday, Feb 23: reading, vocabulary and a paragraph test on the short stories Charles and Antaeus. Read the stories a couple of times at least to prepare. You should know the stories very well.  Make sure you know the new vocabulary too.

In class today we did Grammar Writing #1.1, began reading the short story, Charles, and worked on Chapter 3 Evergreen - paragraphs. (2 handouts)

Note: If you missed the first class, go to the lab when you have time and ask a teacher for the Chapter 3 Paragraph and Reading Test. Write “For Louise” on the top, so I can pick it up to mark it.

 

Homework: Due Tuesday - On all homework, please write your name, student number, date and title of the assignment.

 

  1. Evergreen writing book Chapter 3: excellent reference chapter on paragraphs

      Read:     7th & 8th edition pages 21-29; do Practices 1 and 2

  1. Ch.3 Paragraph: Write a paragraph of about 150 words about a memory of your first day of school. Remember what we reviewed today about paragraphs.
  2. Finish the short story, Charles.
